Without question, the Dobbs case, which overruled Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood, has rocked the country and raised very serious questions not only for patients, but also for providers, employers, insurers and of course healthcare lawyers. This program dives into the fray, starting with a thoughtful analysis of the case itself by Susan Freeman, a nationally known appellate lawyer. Marki Stewart, an Arizona lawyer with a special interest in maternal healthcare, will survey the Arizona statutes that will govern abortion services in Arizona. And Karen Owens, a lawyer experienced in addressing clinical issues, will speak to key issues that are expected to trouble clinicians.
Susan M. Freeman, a partner at Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie LLP, has practiced appellate law for more than 45 years. She has briefed over 300 appeals and argued over 100 of them, primarily in Arizona appellate courts and the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, but also in other jurisdictions across the country. She has briefed and argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, as counsel for parties and as counsel for amici curiae. She has been counsel of record for over 150 reported appellate decisions on legal topics ranging from commercial and tort law to ERISA, employment, tax, and bankruptcy, including many healthcare-related issues. She has served as president of the premier, invitation-only national organization of appellate lawyers, the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers. She has also served as a judge pro tem at the Arizona Court of Appeals, taught Appellate Advocacy as an adjunct faculty member at Arizona State University School of Law, and served as a faculty member at Appellate Practice Institutes in Arizona and nationally.
