Join AzSHA for a virtual discussion with vaccine law scholars, an Arizona health law attorney, and legal counsel for Houston Methodist, the first hospital system in the country to implement a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy. Participants will be able to:
- Understand the ramifications of federal and state statutes, regulations, and litigation on private health care employer vaccination mandates and discuss how to navigate conflicts of law;
- Address key legal issues (e.g., CMS vaccine mandates, ADA/ADAA, EEOC Guidance) that health care employers should consider regarding vaccine policies and procedures, determination of requests for exemptions, and reasonable accommodation;
- Identify practical strategies for responding to vaccine resistance and counter common forms of anti-vaccination misinformation; and
- Anticipate the future of vaccine law and policy based on lessons learned from the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Presenters:
Brian Dean Abramson is a leading expert on vaccine law, teaching the subject as adjunct professor of vaccine law at the Florida International University College of Law. He has presented and published extensively on the topic of vaccine law, including as the primary author of Vaccine, Vaccination, and Immunization Law published by Bloomberg Law in cooperation with the American Health Law Association.
Brian received his JD, summa cum laude, from the Florida International University College of Law and an LLM in intellectual property law with highest honors from the George Washington University Law School.
Mark Easterly is a Vice President for Legal Services at Houston Methodist, a nationally recognized nonprofit health care system in Houston, Texas. His areas of practice are general corporate and health care law, with emphasis on business transactions, contracts, physician employment and medical staff relations, health care regulatory issues, hospital operations, nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations, information technology and real estate. Mark received his undergraduate degree from Southwestern University and law degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law.
Denise Hill, JD, MPA is an associate professor at Drake University with 25 years of health care legal, policy, public administration, and ADR experience. She also practices health and employment law and serves as a mediator. Denise is a seasoned author and speaker on many topics, including vaccine mandates. Most recently she authored Vaccine Mandates in the Health Care Workplace: A Legal Primer for Employers, published by the American Health Law Association. Denise graduated with honors from Drake University (law and MPA), Wartburg College (BA), and Waldorf College (AA).
Susan Goodman is a healthcare attorney in private practice in Tucson, Arizona. Her process-based, integrated approach to compliance through assessment and intervention involves patient care, operations, and shared services. She also supports the US Bankruptcy Trustee as a privacy/patient care ombudsman in Chapter 9 and 11 health care reorganizations.
Susan received her JD from the University of Arizona, James E. Rogers College of Law, graduating with distinction, including Summa Cum Laude and Order of the Coif. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, graduating with academic distinction. Ms. Goodman received a RN diploma from Bronson Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, affiliated with Western Michigan University, graduating with First Honor and Nursing Excellence recognition. She remains licensed as a registered nurse in Arizona.
